Within eight miles of Byreside is Beamish Open Air Museum, which needs more than a single visit to be appreciated.
Closer still are Tanfield Railway, with steam locomotives on most summer weekends, and Causey Arch, reputed to be the world’s oldest railway bridge. Gibside Chapel lies down the valley, and Ebchester Roman Museum and Derwentcote Blast Furnace are an easy drive.
